October has already been full of surprises this election cycle. But when Elon Musk announced he would join Donald Trump on stage Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, no one expected the billionaire would leap into the meme history books.
Musk strutted on the stage with Trump while wearing black cowboy boots, a Texan-style belt buckle, an Occupy Mars T-Shirt, a black blazer, and a black MAGA hat. He was there to put juice behind his endorsement of Trump. “As you can see I am not just MAGA—I am Dark MAGA,” Musk said while whipping up the crowd.
The Tesla CEO roamed the stage behind Trump and attempted to work the crowd like a professional hypeman while the former President gave a speech. Then, Musk leapt into the air, a serene smile on his face. AFP photographer Jim Watson snapped a picture at just the right moment to capture the whole scene. The blurred crowd, Musk seeming to float in the air, and Trump half turned towards his fellow billionaire with a sneer on his face.
It was the stuff meme dreams are made of.

Watson also captured the moment Trump and Musk shook hands. It’s an odd picture that shows Trump towering over Musk, who is reaching upward with his eyes almost rolled into the back of his head and a little grin twitching on his face. He looks like Grima Wormtongue pledging fealty to a liege-lord he plans to betray.

On X, the site Musk purchased for 44 billion and is now worth considerably less, “DorkMaga” trended as users posted photoshopped Musk into embarrassing images and memes using Watson’s photos.
The darkest, and most viral, was a picture of Musk leaping from the Twin Towers on 9/11. “Imagine buying a website so people will think you’re cool and two years later people photoshop you jumping out of a window on 9/11,” Ela Bambust said in a post on X above the image.
