Lego’s deal with Universal—struck after its partnership with Warner Bros., home of The Lego Movie, ended in 2020—is producing some big returns: the two companies have just signed a trio of directors, each of whom will make a live-action movie. And the list is impressive: Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level), and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).
This news comes from Deadline, which has the list of names and not much else, noting “all three movies’ plots are under wraps.” Kasdan, who has Red One out later this year and a third Jumanji movie set for December 2026, will work from a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul that’s based on an “original idea” and earlier draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows. Jenkins’ film will be based on a script she co-wrote with her former DC cohort Geoff Johns. Finally, Cornish will be rewriting a script by Heather Anne Campbell from a treatment by Simon Rich.
That’s a lot of bricks in motion, although it’s worth reiterating (again) that these are live-action projects. Thus far Lego and Universal have been sticking to the animated sphere, working together on several Lego Jurassic Park/Jurassic World-themed video games and TV series. There was also that Lego-ified Wicked trailer, and a division of Universal, Focus Features, was behind the recent Lego-animated Pharrell Williams biopic Piece By Piece.
So, what might a live-action Lego movie look like? Will they be based on famous (but non-IP) Lego sets or concepts? Will Lego itself play a prominent role in the storyline? When might any of these movies be arriving in theaters? And does this mean Patty Jenkins’ long-teased Star Wars movie is not happening (again) after all?
